In fact, it is difficult to travel very far in the state without running across one. There are two types of markers. The first, subject markers, “are solely educational and reveal aspects of local history that are important to a community or region. These markers honor topics such as church congregations, schools, communities, businesses, events and individuals. A subject marker is placed at a site that has a historical association with the topic, but no restriction is placed on the use of the property or site.

Missing entirely from the narrative are the American Indians, who inhabited the land prior to the arrival of Spanish, Mexican, or American settlers but who have been reduced to shadows or endnotes in Texan historical pedagogy. Each of these groups sees the performance of the Texan as a personal monument to their ancestors, a remembrance of their presence, one which reaffirms their exploitation, or heroism, or any of the other cultural narratives which have perpetuated Texan historical memory to this day.
